First Week Jitters
“I got the job!” …Now I’m terrified I’m going to fail!
What if they realize I’m not as ‘expert‘ as my resume said?
What if I can’t keep up with the pace?”
There is a specific kind of anxiety that hits the Sunday night before a new job starts.
We call it Imposter Syndrome, but for the working class, it’s usually just “Survival Stress.”
After weeks or months of being told “No,” suddenly someone said “Yes,” and now the pressure is on to prove they made the right choice.
Here’s a secret: In 2026, nobody expects you to be a superhero on Day 1. Most companies are just happy to have a reliable human in the seat.
Your goal for the first week isn’t to “reinvigorate the department”, it’s to learn the “Internal Language.”
The people who fail in the first month aren’t the ones who don’t know the software; they’re the ones who are too afraid to ask where the “Help” files are.
Use the “Listen and Learn” Strategy.
You have a 30-day “grace period” to be the person who asks the “dumb” questions. Use it.
Try this “Day 1 to Day 5” checklist:
- The “Acronym List”: Every company has weird names for things. Start a private note on your phone. Every time someone says a word you don’t know (e.g., “The JIRA board,” “The Q3 Pivot”), write it down and look it up or ask later.
- The “Stakeholder Map”: Figure out who actually gets things done. It’s not always the boss. Sometimes it’s the office manager or the senior tech who has been there for 10 years. Be extra nice to them.
- The “Small Win” Focus: Don’t try to fix the whole company. Find one tiny task that is annoying your boss and finish it by Wednesday. It shows you’re a “closer.”
Even if you haven’t started yet, create a “Day 1 Notebook.”
On the first page, write down three questions you want to ask your new manager:
- “What does a ‘win’ look like for me in the first 30 days?”
- “Who is the best person to talk to if I hit a technical snag?”
- “How do you prefer to receive updates; email, Slack, or a quick chat?”
They hired you because they believe in you. Now, you just have to believe in the process.
You’ve got this!
