Ghost Jobs
“Have you ever applied for a job that seemed perfect, only to see the exact same ad posted again every single month for a year?
Welcome to the world of ‘Ghost Jobs‘, where the company isn’t actually hiring, but they’re still collecting your data.”
It’s one of the most frustrating parts of job hunting in 2026.
You put in the effort, you meet every requirement, and then… nothing!
You find out later the role was never filled, or it’s been “open” since 2024.
Why do companies do this?
Sometimes they want to keep a “pipeline” of resumes just in case someone quits.
Sometimes they want to look like they are growing to impress investors. And sometimes, they’re just too busy to take the ad down.
Whatever the reason, Ghost Jobs steal your time and your hope.
If you want to stay “Agile,” you have to learn how to spot a fake so you can stop wasting your “A-Game” energy on ghosts.
Become a “Job Detective”.
Before you spend two hours on an application, do a 2-minute background check.
Try these “Ghost-Busting” red flags today:
- The “Forever” Posting: Look at the date. If a job was posted “30+ days ago” and then “re-posted” yesterday, be careful. If they haven’t found someone in 3 months, they probably aren’t in a rush to hire.
- The “Vague-Book” Description: If the job description is just a list of generic traits (“Team player,” “Hard worker”) without specific software, goals, or a salary range, it might just be a template to collect resumes.
- The “Check the Source”: Go to the company’s actual website. If the job is on LinkedIn but not on their official “Careers” page, it’s likely a ghost.
Pick one job you were planning to apply for.
Go to a job board and search for people who currently have that exact job title at that company.
If they have 5 people already doing that job and no one has left recently, send a 1-sentence DM to one of them: “Hey [Name], I saw an opening for your team, is it a new role or a replacement?”
If they don’t answer or say “I’m not sure,” don’t spend all day on the cover letter. Move on to a “live” lead.

Tolu Ojewunmi and Victor Okwara2 CommentsThis is a needed conversation. Job searching is already draining enough without people pouring real effort into roles that were never active to begin with.
I like how this turns frustration into something useful by giving people a simple way to vet opportunities before investing too much time. More job seekers need this kind of practical filter.A lot of candidates assume silence means rejection, when in many cases the role was never active to begin with. That shift in perspective alone can save people a lot of unnecessary stress.
